Canucks legend Pavel Bure (aka the Russian Rocket) originally wore the number 10 when he joined the Canucks, then switched to 96 midway through his tenure in Vancouver, and then back to 10 for the 1997-98 season before being traded to the Florida Panthers.

The jersey number change from 10 to 96 commemorated September 6, 1991, the day on which he first landed in North America from Moscow (9th month, 6th day). Bure asked to wear 96 when he first joined the Canucks, but was not permitted to do so by head coach Pat Quinn, who did not approve of high jersey numbers. After the Canucks traded with the Buffalo Sabres for Alexander Mogilny, reuniting the two Russian players, high jersey numbers were deemed acceptable because Mogilny had used number 89 since defecting to North America in 1989, and Bure made the switch to 96.
