Upon his first retirement from the NHL in 1997, Lemieux became the only player to retire from the NHL with a greater than 2 points per game average (1494 points in 745 games). On November 17, 1997, Lemieux was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, becoming the ninth player in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived. Just 3 years later, Super Mario returned to the NHL Mid way through the 2000-01 season. Lemieux proved that his scoring touch had not disappeared by scoring a goal and three points, including an assist 33 seconds into the first shift of his return. Lemieux resumed the captaincy the following season, as Jaromír Jágr was sent to the Washington Capitals.
