Vladimir Konstantinov was six days removed from celebrating the 1997 Stanley Cup when a limousine accident left him with traumatic brain injury and ended his career. The Red Wings wore this “Believe” patch the 1997-98 season in his honor and went on to sweep the Washington Capitals to win the Cup. During their celebration, Detroit brought Konstantinov onto the ice in his wheelchair to hold the trophy, and that image instantly became one of the most iconic in NHL history.
The ‘98 cup run was a special one for Stevie Y, as he won the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP as the Wings won back-to-back championships.
