This 1993 Colorado Rockies black alternate is one of the rarest styles in the franchise’s history. Only worn for one season, this gem features a 1993 Inaugural Season patch and the proper stacked purple numbers outlined in gray. Many customs get this detail wrong by using white rather than gray.

The black button-front design was intended for use during home day games, but Rockies manager Don Baylor reportedly disliked the look, so this style was worn only a few times before being discontinued after 1993. The Rockies also wore a very similar looking mesh pullover jersey that was used for BP. This, however, is the double knit authentic on-field version.

Collectors have noted that the first batch of these jerseys originally had no names on the back because they were planned for home use only. When the team decided to begin wearing them on the road, names on nameplates were added.

Andrés “Big Cat” Galarraga was the early heartbeat of Rockies baseball. He won the 1993 NL batting title, crushed towering home runs at Mile High and Coors, and became one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Few hitters made the start of Rockies baseball feel bigger than Big Cat.
