When the Federal League Chicago Whales folded after the 1915 season, their now-vacant ballpark quickly found a new occupant. The NL Cubs moved right in and played their first game at what is now Wrigley Field on April 20, 1916, against Cincinnati. Some argue that the Cubs also inherited the Whales’ uniforms, as the 1916 Cubs jersey looked quite a bit like the Whales’ 1915 entry, which had also been worn as a throwback in 2015.

For this July 6 game, appropriately against the Reds, who also wore 1916 uniforms, the Cubs donned these “Turn Back the Clock” Majestic knit half-button jersey with a black sun collar, black knit trim on the sleeve openings, and black block numbers on the back. These numbers, of course, were not historically accurate for the era. A red/black wishbone “C,” inhabited by the first appearance of a “Walking Cub” logo, adorns the left front chest.
